The Maui emergency chief steps down after defending the choice to silence the sirens during a wildfire.

Mayor Richard Bissen reported that Chief Herman Andaya left for “health reasons.” His retirement is effective right away, creating a vacancy at the emergency department’s top while the devastated island copes with the aftermath of the fire that at least 111 people died.

In a statement, Mayor Bissen said: “Given the severity of the problem we are facing, my staff and I will appoint someone to this crucial post as soon as we can, and I look forward to making that announcement soon.

Andaya’s competence for the job was questioned as he faced harsh criticism for telling the residents of Maui to leave as flames moved closer to their homes.

The former MEMA chief said he does not regret not sounding the deafening warnings when asked by a reporter who claimed that the system might have saved hundreds of lives during a media briefing on Wednesday.

Andaya asserted that the loud sirens are typically used for tsunami warnings and that Hawaiians are trained to seek higher ground when they sound. However, the official government website for Hawaii states that one of the disasters for which the “all-hazard” may be employed is wildfires.

Even if we had sounded the siren, Andaya said, “We wouldn’t have been able to aid those people up there on the mountaintop.

He also defended his professional history, telling reporters that he had completed a stringent screening process and received in-depth training before taking the lead position in 2017. Although Andaya has worked with emergency management while employed by the housing department and serving in the mayor’s cabinet, this is the only direct experience she has had with the organization.

After looking through at least 45% of the burn area as of Thursday, rescue crews reported that 111 people had been discovered dead; however, as authorities continue to dig through the rubble, the death toll is anticipated to grow.

Thousands of displaced residents have been sheltered in shelters, hotels, and Airbnb lodgings while tens of thousands of houses and businesses remain without electricity.

The fires, which are now the worst in the US in more than a century, are under investigation to find out what started them.
