John Pelletier Wikipedia, Wiki, Wife, Las Vegas, Maine, Obituary, Cresa -: Maui Police Chief John Pelletier describes ongoing efforts to identify the dead as Hawaii struggles to recover from the devastating wildfire that broke out on Tuesday, August 8, 2023. According to reports, the tragedy is the worst wildfire to hit the United States in more than a century.
On Saturday, August 12, Pelletier stated that only 3% of the whole search area had been covered by official cadaver dogs. Even if there are currently 96 fatalities, he continued, “None of us really know the size of it (the wildfire) yet.” He went on:
“We’ve got an area that we have to contain that is at least 5 square miles, and it is full of our loved ones.”
Prior to this, John Pelletier worked for more than 20 years for the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department.
John Pelletier, a native of Buffalo, New York, became the first non-Hawaiian to serve as chief of police. His appointment, according to Hawaii News Now, was made in an effort to promote openness and accountability within the force. His responsibilities are described in detail on LinkedIn:
“Overseas public safety and police operations for 165,000 residents and 3 million tourists annually.”
Pelletier is a third-generation police officer that works in Wailuku, Hawaii, according to Hawaii News Now. John attended FBINA 276 and the University of Nevada–Las Vegas before graduating from the FBI National Academy, according to his LinkedIn profile.
He acknowledged leading SWAT and K-9 teams, serving as a detective sergeant in the gang section, participating in internal affairs, and serving as a teacher at the police academy during his interview with commission chair Frank De Rego. Additionally, he oversaw the Las Vegas Strip when there were many shootings there in 2017.
John Pelletier responded, “My experience working with the Las Vegas PD will help me head the department at one of the largest tourist destinations in the world,” when asked why he would be a good fit. In his words, he wanted to “reboot the entire department.”
To guarantee that everyone in Hawaii feels “they have equal protection under the law,” he made it a priority during his tenure to address the numerous challenges resulting from racial, ethnic, and cultural factors.
“Our diversity is our strength, make no mistake about that.” he remarked
What did John Pelletier have to say about their search for and identification of the deceased?
Almost the whole town of Lahaina was destroyed by the catastrophe, leaving nothing but ashes behind. Josh Green, the governor, reported that at least 2,200 buildings suffered damage or were completely destroyed, costing an estimated $6 billion.
Pelletier added that because whatever remains they pick up disintegrate, it is difficult to identify the deceased. Only two individuals have been named as of yet.
The ruins of homes that have been initially scoped have been marked with an “X” in a bright orange colour, and if any human remains were discovered, they have been marked with an “HR.” Cadaver dogs are also being utilized to help in the operation.

Additionally, John Pelletier advised those who had lost family members to submit a DNA test in order to “identify loved ones.”
Authorities still working to identify the deceased.
