Katie Zelem News
Katie Zelem, the captain of Manchester United, thought her chances of competing in the World Cup were over when she was not chosen for England’s final pre-tournament training in April.
Zelem, 27, made her ninth appearance for England and made her maiden start as they defeated China 6-1 on Tuesday in Adelaide.
She was one of the six midfielders chosen for the 23-person team on May 31.
After the Euros, when I wasn’t selected, Zelem said, “That was one of the hardest moments to take.”
“I genuinely thought that my World Cup dream was over when I learned that I had not been chosen for the April camp. There was only one camp prior to the selection.
“For a couple of days, I really thought that despite all of my efforts this season, it was just not meant to be.
At Manchester United, we participated in some pivotal games for the league title and the FA Cup final, and the player claimed that this helped him change his attention from winning to simply doing the best he could for the team.
Zelem noted, “It just feels worlds apart” in Australia after being appointed to the preliminary team but not being chosen for Euro 2022.
A few days ago, the girls were discussing how it had been exactly one year since they had won the Euros, said Zelem.
A year ago today, I sat there and watched them win the Euros. Football is a sport that can change drastically, as it did in my case.
England will play Nigeria in the round of 16 on Monday after defeating Haiti, Denmark, and China three times each in the group stages.
Brazil, a South American champion, Olympic winner Canada, and two-time champion Germany were all eliminated during the group stage.
“There is no way that we want to go back the next week. We all appear to be conscious of our major goal, which is to stay put for three more weeks, Zelem stated.
Band “Meringue-tangs” formation
While Zelem continues to focus on matters on the pitch, the Lionesses have been enjoying themselves off of it.
Zelem, who is now in charge of the DJing, revealed on Saturday that a few of the squad’s members have formed a girl band called the “Meringue-tangs.”
“Selecting the songs while riding the bus is harder, which explains why I wasn’t that nervous [on Tuesday],” the performer said. Zelem laughed.
There are many people to win over. Everyone is shouting. However, I caution the woman, “You know what, I’m the DJ, don’t tell the DJ what to do.”
“Two singers, Rachel Daly, and Millie Bright, inform us we’ve formed a female band. The ‘Meringue-tangs’ are Keira [Walsh], Daly, Bright, and I.
I think we had meringues lately for dessert, although I’m not sure why. You shouldn’t listen to us because we have a slight tone deafness.
Whitney Houston’s greatest songs, Sister Sledge’s “We Are Family,” and Natasha Bedingfield’s “Unwritten” are all in the Meringue-tangs’ playlist.
Captain Bright said that no applications have yet been received despite the invitation to the auditions being extended to the rest of the bus.
We’re trying to get Georgia [Stanway] in, but we’re not Beyonce. We really aren’t singers! We, however, chuckle. Fair enough, we always sing-song on the way to practice.
We like to think that we got a few things right. It’s good since each of us brings a unique flavor.
There isn’t exactly a reason why “Meringue-tangs” are called that; it just sort of came up at one of the dinners. You might or might not see us on Britain’s Got Talent in the future given that it has been there ever since.
