President Bill Clinton asked him to write a report on the necessity of additional pro bono legal work. He established special counsel laws in 1999, which influenced Mueller’s investigation into the Russian government’s efforts to meddle in the 2016 presidential election.

Additionally, he co-represented Vice President Al Gore in Bush v. Gore and the deans of the vast majority of famous private law schools in Grutter v. Bollinger. Katyal was given the Grand Prize Litigator of the Year for 2016 and 2017 by American Lawyer Magazine in 2017. Katyal has come under fire for creating anti-union filings in the Supreme Court cases Janus v. AFSCME and Epic Systems Corp. v. Lewis. Her achievement in these instances was considered to as a “huge gain” by Katyal’s employer, Hogan Lovells.

Katyal represented Nestle and Cargill before the Supreme Court in Nestlé USA, Inc. v. Doe, a class-action lawsuit brought by formerly enslaved children who were kidnapped and forced to work on cocoa farms in the Ivory Coast. In 2021, Katyal aided banking titan Citigroup in its endeavor to recover a $900 million error let transferred to Revlon Inc. creditors. In State v. Chauvin, Katyal backed the prosecution as well. Katyal presented the respondents’ position in Moore v. Harper, a 2022 Supreme Court case regarding election law, redistricting, and the autonomous state legislative doctrine.

By a vote of 6-3, the court rejected the autonomous legislature thesis and supported Katyal’s point of view. In a 2022 lawsuit, Johnson & Johnson was charged for disseminating talcum baby powder, which causes cancer. Katyal spoke up for the business. For this job, his hourly rate was $2465.
