District Attorney Pamela Price of Alameda County begins her recall campaign.

A group named “Save Alameda for Everyone (SAFE)” officially requested the recall of Alameda District Attorney Pamela Price this week. Price has come under increasing fire for her handling of the criminal justice system.

Families of seven homicide victims in Alameda County gathered on Saturday to protest the recall in front of the Oakland courtroom, according to KPIX. According to reports, the relatives wanted justice, responsibility, and a change in leadership and accused Price of giving priority to criminals over victims.

According to the Chronicle, Price, who was elected in 2022, has already encountered a number of difficulties. Detractors claim that her policies have led to an increase in crime. According to the Oakland Police Department’s publicly available crime data, violent crime has increased, with homicides up 80% from pre-pandemic levels and burglaries up 40% in the last year, respectively. According to KNTV, she has also been charged with nepotism for allegedly recruiting her boyfriend as an employee.

Naturally, the recall brings to mind Chesa Boudin’s removal from office last year, with its sharply divided public opinion over crime rates and criminal punishment.

According to KPIX, Anna Tolentino, whose son Rienheart Asuncion was killed in an instance of road rage last year, presented her story at the demonstration on Saturday: Toletino said that the offender is linked to multiple homicides and should have received a more severe sentence even though the adolescent who killed her son signed a plea deal and is presently doing time in juvenile detention.

Price’s campaign responded to the recall movement with a statement comparing the activists to those who stormed the U.S. Capitol on January 6.

They said that Republican Party-backed special interest organizations from the outside are aiming to take power in a similar way as insurrectionists.

According to reports, 90,000 valid signatures are still required to get the recall on the ballot; this process is expected to cost about $8 million.
