Sean Kaufman News

“The Summer I Turned Pretty” is playing. Because Season 2 delves into some summertime grief, the performers found it challenging to sustain the season’s emotional mentality for an extended period of time.

In an interview with TheWrap conducted before the SAG-AFTRA strike, Sean Kaufman, who plays Steven on the show, said: “Whatever acting method people choose to use — replacement or method — it’s tough because it’s like I’m surrounded by funny people in a loving environment, and all I want to do — especially in moments of like extreme vulnerability like that — is to crack a joke to ease the tension or not let myself go there because it’s too painful.” It’s challenging to genuinely allow oneself to go there, especially if you do it every day like you did for a large portion of Season 2.

In the second season of the Prime Video series based on Jenny Han’s books, Belly (Lola Tung) is in a very different place as she laments the loss of Susannah Fisher (Rachel Blanchard) and considers what went wrong in the early stages of a relationship with her longtime crush Conrad Fisher (Christopher Briney). This summer, Cousins Beach won’t be visited by Belly or her brother Steven (Sean Kaufman), who are currently excluded as a result of both of these instances.

Season 1 ended on a hopeful note when Susannah told her sons that she will start an experimental cancer treatment. One of the first clues that she has died away is a gift she sends to Steven for his high school graduation.

“Season 2’s tone felt entirely different. Obviously, a lot changed while we were still filming the same show, but tonally, I remember how little preparation I would have needed for Season 1,” said Kaufman. “I would be relaxing and laughing backstage until they would suddenly call for action, and we would be involved. Season 2 necessitated a lot of pauses to reflect on what was occurring and how to approach the subject at hand.

The first mention of Susannah’s death is in the second volume of Jenny Han’s trilogy, “It’s Not Summer Without You.”

The Wrap quoted Blanchard as saying, “As far as I knew, they were always going to stick to the books.”

Even though the first three episodes of the second season have a depressing vibe, Blanchard, Jackie Chung, and Kyra Sedgwick still find humor and happiness in the show.

I think there are a lot of happy times, Chung said. There are always kids.

“Still finding a way to have fun,” Blanchard said in his closing statement. Life itself is it.

The first three episodes of “The Summer I Turned Pretty” premiere on Prime Video on July 14. Each Friday after that, the remaining episodes will air.
