Tess Gunty discusses the interaction between the reader and author in “The Rabbit Hutch”

South Bend, Indiana, provided a glimpse of the industrial heartland’s future to the nation sixty years ago. The closure of the Studebaker auto plant around Christmas 1963 portended the impending demise of American manufacturing and the devastation of Midwestern cities. In a town of 130,000 people, 7,000 people lost their jobs.

Although South Bend has somewhat recovered since then, the six-decade-long legacy of abandonment is nevertheless never far from view. Tess Gunty, a 30-year-old author, has now used South Bend’s history of decline as the unlikely inspiration for her award-winning debut novel.

“I was born 30 years after Studebaker closed,” she remarked. “In my opinion, the effects of economic collapse become quite personal. The beating hearts of the people you know and love serve as their foundation.

The neighborhood where Gunty, a native of South Bend, spent her first five years of childhood was shown to Costa. “Apparently the most formative years according to psychologists!” she chuckled.

Characters on the outskirts of a made-up city that is based on Gunty’s hometown have been created. The title of the book, “The Rabbit Hutch,” refers to the run-down apartment complex where Blandine Watkins lives in the narrative.

She gave two answers when asked if Gunty was a Watkins: “No and Yes. Insofar as I am any character in this novel, I am Blandine. I don’t believe you can write without incorporating a good deal of your personal emotional history into each and every character. Despite the fact that I have never had a child, I have experienced panic and a sense of being in controllessness.

Young adults who have aged out of the foster care system without having found a “forever” home are followed in the novel by Blandine and her roommates.

Gunty’s own experience was different even though she writes about orphans: “I’ve been incredibly lucky. My family has always shown me unconditional affection. It was crucial to understand the psychology of folks who had been actually abandoned when I thought of this community as being essentially orphaned.

Being the offspring of academics whose talent outstripped their means, Gunty grew up with an eye for minutiae that convey distinction and prestige.

The comment from Costa was, “You write in a funny and scathing way about the new aristocracy in suburban America, where everyone smells like dryer sheets; they’re wearing outdoor gear that’s meant for climbing mountains, but they’re in the Indiana suburbs.”

Well, I did have a personal experience with this, she added. “We received free tuition at a Catholic high school where I attended high school, allowing my family to attend a school that we most likely couldn’t have afforded otherwise. I finally realized the relative nature of my personal financial situation at this point. We may have had financial hardship, but we always had what we needed. And it wasn’t the case for my neighborhood buddies, you know. They were dealing with a lot more severe neglect and poverty.

Tess Gunty became the youngest winner of the National Book Award since renowned author Philip Roth in 1960 when “The Rabbit Hutch” won the fiction category last year. At a time when sales of literary fiction are drastically down, book banning is widespread, and some people think an English major in college is no longer relevant, the award helped to make Gunty famous.

Gunty, though, is a fervent supporter of her field. “The book is a collaboration between the reader and the author,” she declared. It’s a creative team effort. It’s not a consumer-product relationship; rather, it’s a more openly entered (and, to me, hallowed) relationship.

Do any of your friends think being a novelist is out-of-date, Costa inquired.

Yes, occasionally people treat you like a blacksmith or something. ‘Wow, I didn’t know you could do that anymore,’ they exclaim.

Gunty’s work hums with a certain type of ambition, both as a breakout talent and as a voice for the people of Indiana, even while she is aware that a literary novel may not be the best venue to address the economic and political problems of our times.

The phrase “the crossroads of America” is the state’s catchphrase, she added. And I struggled to comprehend what that meant for a very long time. Now, however, I see it as a location where all of America’s paradoxes are very much alive and aggressively at odds with one another. I believe it is incorrect to presume that Indiana is a state with a single set of ideas and a single population. It is a big, diverse, and unfathomable environment.
