Rashida Jones, president of MSNBC, recruited Wagner for the position and gave her the freedom to explore new things when she said last year, “We’re giving her the time and space to grow.” Such support was crucial during the first few weeks of the show because ratings in the 9 p.m. hour among viewers 25 to 54, the key demographic desired by advertisers, dropped by 50%.
